FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – November 21, 2012

Contact: Susan Downs, Executive Director (s.downs@thinkoflaura.org)

On Thursday, November 1, 2012, Jim Crandall, President of the Laura Crandall Brown Ovarian Cancer Foundation, presented a check for $50,000 to Dr. Ronald Alvarez and Dr. Ed Partridge of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center to further research in the early detection of ovarian cancer.

The pilot program, conducted by Dr. Charles Landen, involves the development of a diagnostic screening tool by analyzing and detecting gene mutations thought to be specific to ovarian cancer.

After having funded two other pilot projects outside of the Birmingham area, the Foundation is happy to be funding this local effort. Mr. Crandall spoke on behalf of the board of directors:

“We are very pleased that UAB has chosen to conduct research in the early diagnosis of ovarian cancer and hope that your efforts will be very fruitful. The mission of the Laura Crandall Brown Ovarian Cancer Foundation is to fund research in areas of early detection and we feel this project fits very well with that mission.”
