2017 GYN Cancer Awareness Month Will Feature Teal Lighting and LCBF’S 8th Annual Head Over Teal 5K/10K & Family Fall Festival

Birmingham, Ala., July 8, 2017

This September, in recognition of GYN Cancer Awareness Month, the Laura Crandall Brown Foundation (LCBF) will light Alabama teal and host its 8th Annual Head Over Teal 5K/10K & Family Fall Festival.

LCBF’s A State of Teal Lighting and Awareness Campaign will begin on September 1st and continue throughout the month to highlight this important month of awareness.  The State Capitol in Montgomery will be lit teal during the weekend of September 8th and Governor Kay Ivey will issue a proclamation officially declaring the month of September GYN Cancer Awareness Month.  Many cities and county commissions will also issue proclamations, and more than 120 businesses and landmarks across the state will light up teal, including Jordan-Hare Stadium (Auburn), Regions Field (Birmingham), Huntsville Botanical Gardens (Huntsville), and Mitchell Cancer Institute (Mobile).  The Birmingham metro area locations of Newk’s Eatery will host a kick-off event on September 7th, with a live stream of the event on Facebook (www.facebook.com/LCBFoundation) and a percentage of the evening’s proceeds benefiting the lighting and awareness campaign.

The month’s awareness and fundraising efforts will culminate at Head Over Teal, set for Saturday, September 23rd, 2017 at The Preserve in Hoover.  This event is a family and pet friendly, and features a 5K and 10K race, and a fun array of fall festival activities for all ages, including games, children’s inflatables, face painting, pumpkin decorating, crafts, and more.  “We are excited to continue the tradition of bringing together families, supporters and survivors for a day of family fun,” said Mary Anne King, LCBF Executive Director.  “The event is a huge hit with families, but more importantly, the funds raised enable us to continue our important programs of early detection research, GYN cancer awareness, and support for patients and their families.”

Online registration is available by visiting www.ThinkOfLaura.org/HeadOverTeal and following the links.  Discounted prices are available for all who register before September 10, 2017.  Participants and supporters can set up a team or individual fundraising page or donate through the LCBF web site.

About the Laura Crandall Brown Foundation:

More than 100,000 women will be diagnosed with a gynecologic (GYN) cancer this year and almost 31,000 will die.  These include cervical, ovarian, uterine/endometrial, vaginal, and vulvar cancers.  Alabama ranks in the top five of states for both cervical and ovarian cancer deaths, and there is no early detection/screening test for four out of five GYN cancers.  LCBF focuses on early detection research, awareness education, and support services for GYN cancer patients and families.  Since our founding in 2009 we have:

·         granted more than $325,000 for ovarian cancer early detection research

·         educated tens of thousands of community members on GYN cancer prevention info, signs and symptoms, and

·         provided emotional, educational, and direct financial support to thousands of GYN cancer patients and their loved ones.
