History

In September 2012, CanSurvive GYN Cancer Support Group lit the State Capitol teal to bring awareness to ovarian and gyn cancers. An awareness ceremony was held in Montgomery and people from all over the state attended. In 2013, the RSA Dexter Tower and the Renaissance Hotel were also lit along with the Capitol Building. CanSurvive hoped this effort would continue to grow over the years.

In 2014 several organizations teamed up to take this awareness effort farther than any of the organizations could have done on their own. As a result of this partnerships, prominent buildings not just in Montgomery but all across the State of Alabama were lit up in teal. Additionally, municipalities across the State of Alabama issued proclamations declaring September as GYN Cancer Awareness Month.

The 2014 official awareness ceremony was held at the Birmingham Barons Regions Field on Tuesday evening, September 2nd.

In 2015, The Club on the top of Birmingham's Red Mountain was the venue for our awareness gathering on September 1st.

The 2016 there was a survivor celebration and memorial observance as a kickoff event.  This has now become its own event hosted by the CanSurvive Support Group.

In 2016 The Laura Crandall Brown Foundation became the sole sponsor of the lighting campaign with the help of other organizations around the state we were able to light up prominent buildings and business as well as municipalities across the State of Alabama issued proclamations.
